Chikhaldara is named after the king Kichak, who was killed by Bheema, one of the Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata. He is said to have been killed by Bheema and thrown in the deep valleys called dari in Marathi language ( language of the State of Maharashtra ) hence the name Kichakdara which was later on spelled as Chikhaldara.

Melghat Tiger Reserve is located in Chikhaldara and Dharni tehsils of Amaravati district in Satpura hill range. This tiger reserve of 1676.93-sq-km is one of the last remaining habitats of Indian tiger in Maharashtra.

Wan sanctuary is located in Melghat area of Amravati District. It is an extension to the Melghat Sanctuary on southeastern part. This area is part and parcel of Melghat and is rich in floral and fauna biodiversity. The hilly rugged terrain possesses Tropical Dry Deciduous forests.

Gavilgarh Fort: ( Gawilgarh or Gawilgad Fort ) The Gavilgad Fort falls under the Melghat Tiger Project. Situated near Chikhaldara hill station in Amravati district, the Gavilgad Fort is bestowed with the natural beauty pf dense forest. The serenity of the forest today encompasses the dramatic war of conquering the fort over the years. The 300 year old fort of Gavilgad has beautifully carved idols. This fort was built in 12th and 13th century by the Gavils, and was later occupied by the Gonds. Gavilgad fort today stands as an evidence of this bloody war.

Gavilgad fort also has an important place in the great epic of Mahabharata. It is believed that Bhima killed Keechaka here and threw him down the cliff. The city of Chikhaldara got its name from here. It was then known as Keechakadara – Chikhaldara is its corruption. The wall comprises of stone sculptures of elephants, bulls, tigers, lions, and also Hindi, Urdu and Arabic scripts. There are ten cannons made of copper, iron and brass inside the fort. Idols of Hanuman and Shiva are also seen.

October to June is the best time to visit Gavilgad fort. The temperature here varies from 39 degree in summer to 5 degree in winter.

Chikhaldara Government Garden: The upper plateau area of Chikhaldara is with full of dense trees, and locality of living people is negligible. The government garden is at upper plateau. The garden is open for visitors is at morning 8.00am to evening 7.00pm. The old name is ‘Company Garden’. Because it is constructed by the foreigners. Many years ago, Gawali people is situated on this garden area. But they are migrated in the wast side. This side is called ‘Pandhari Village’ .

Various flowers and plants is also available in this garden. The swimming tank facility is also provided by the ‘Hanuman Vyam Prasarak Mandal’. The special area of this garden is saved for rose tree. Many rare plants in cold air region is also available. The mini train is the special attraction of this garden.

Bhimkund: Situated 1.5 km through the village, this will be the place where Bhima is said to get washed his fingers in a pond after killing Keechaka. A 3500-foot deep valley and a stream about the left with the valley would be the points of interest

Bir Lake : This Lake is built under British government rule in Dec 1890. This lake is built in basalt. It is used for soldiers in the British government rle hence called as Bir Lake. The water was initially used for Chikhaldara town. It also has a old garden but it is not well maintained.

Mahadev Temple : This temple is at 6km. from the KalaPani Lake. There is a way from Mozari village to go towards this temple. The people visited this temple in large nos. in the month of ‘Shrawan’ (after mid July ) on every Monday.

Devi Mandir: This level is nearer for the shakkar lake, the cave temple lies under 3 big slabs of rock. H2o from the shakkar lake continuously seeps through the ceiling from the cave.

Shakkar Lake : is on the way going towards Gawilgarh fort. The water from this lake is used for water supply office by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran. There is arrangement of water boats also.
